 2023 Preview

W.S. Neal completed the 2022 season with a 7-5 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region one, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. W.S. Neal reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to St. James by a score of 42-21.

The Eagles won as many games as in any season since 2015. It marked the first time since the 2017 season that the Eagles qualified for the playoffs. The Eagles hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Fountain saw improvement as they won seven games following a 0-10 record in 2021.

W.S. Neal was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.5 points a game.

Since 2010, W.S. Neal has gone a combined 54-82. Their 39.7% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, W.S. Neal has managed to compile a record of 113-149. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 3A and 257th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles are led by head coach Hugh Fountain who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 56-34 over the past eight seasons at W.S. Neal. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won one region crown with Coach Fountain. His 260 wins rank 9th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Fountain's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-seven times and won six region championships. Coach Fountain won two state championships prior to arriving at W.S. Neal, the last coming in 2017 at Escambia Academy.

The Eagles enjoyed their best season since 2015 and things are looking up for W.S. Neal under head coach Hugh Fountain.

The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season.

The Eagles open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Georgiana on Friday, August 25 at Buddy Taylor Field. Last year the Georgiana Panthers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 1A region two. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Leroy by a score of 47-12.

W.S. Neal and Georgiana have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 10-6-3 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Georgiana winning by a score of 18-14.

W.S. Neal lost 3A All-State  linebacker Kevin Farrish to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.
